Kedarkantha trek in Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand is far and wide popular for its ravishing beauty and thrilling panoramic winter landscapes. Winter trek:

Kedarkantha claims to be the best winter trek for its accessibility to virgin snow. It receives maximum footfall in winters. The awestruck gentle slope of the kedarkantha peak is draped in snow throughout the winters. Extreme cold demands multiple layers to keep yourself warm. The temperature varies from -5 to 10 degree Celsius between night and day. The average rainfall received is 50mm due to western disturbances over the northern India. Juda ka talaab stays frozen throughout the winter. Keep your water bottles full as all the possible water streams might have frozen.

Spring trek:
Kedarkantha trek in March/ April/ May
Almost no rainfall and good temperature is favorable for the trekkers who want to hike conveniently without weather complexities. Nature is abundant everywhere. Sublime water streams flows soft. No need to be anxious about drinking water availability.

  1. We can also provide you transport from nearest airport/rail head/ city at a cost ranging from 4000rs to 6000rs. Depending upon the distance to base camp, the price is applicable for 8 persons. If you wish to negotiate yourself, we can also provide you the contacts of cab service providers.
  2. Offloading charges are 300/bag for one day on informing 7 days before the commencement of the trek, thereafter, 350/ bag for one day.
  3. In case of illness/ sickness/ injury, the trekker will be escorted back to base camp by the support staff.

Day 1 - Arrival at Sankri village (197km drive from Dehradun).

A long drive of approx 7-8hrs from Dehradun to Sankri village along the Tons river is a enthralling experience for its spectacular landscape throughout the way.

Though Tons is a tributary of Yamuna river but it has double the volume of Yamuna. On the way Purola, Mori and Naitwar are popular towns. You can have your lunch at any of these places.

Driving through the woods after Purola is captivating for its thick oak trees chasing your way . Roaring ‘Tons’river flowing along with you till Naitwar adds charm to the drive. Actually, Naitwar is a place where Rupin and Supin rivers meet to form 'Tons' river. From Naitwar, you enter into ‘Supin Valley' to reach Sankri village. It is the base camp for the Kedarkantha trek.

After a long drive, today's efforts starts paying through the stunning view of Swargarohini peaks. One can take a short walk into the ‘Saur’ village near Sankri. Wooden carved homes of Saur magnifies the architectural heritage of this village. Delicious food, intermingling with local people and cosy sleep will be the blessings for the trek.

Day 2 - Sankri - Juda ka talab (4km trek)

Wake up early and have the tea with the view of Swargarohini. By the time, you have your breakfast and pack you bags, the pack lunch will be ready for the way. Kedarkantha trekking starts from here. The trail from the Sankri runs from the village and soon enters into forest. There are several bridges on this meandering trail. Throughout the trek, floor is enveloped with the leaves of trees. Walking over these dried leaves is a blissfull experience.

The 4km trek is going to take you to ‘Juda ka talab' lake perched at an altitude of 9100ft. Trekking won't take more than 5hrs. The Kedarkantha trek overlaps with the local economic vein. Local people can be seen moving up and down carrying loads of dailyneeds, fuel woods and fodder. It encourages you to stay good on the trek.

Juda ka talab is an exotic small lake surrounded with thick oak forest. Only a few such lakes in Uttarakhand provide you a vibrant mix of thick forest, alpine lake and Himalayan peaks. At night, sitting next to the campfire under the sky full of stars and a lake beside you is a moment worth coming for.

Juda ka talab - Kedarkantha Base camp (4km trek)

At moderate speed, the trek of 4km can be covered easily in 3hrs. After breakfast, the journey on the conspicuous straight trek starts. Subsequently, trek enters into dense forest of Pine, Oak and Rhododendron. It is delightful to witness the local mud huts used by shepherds and villagers.

Finally, the serpentine trail ends at Kedarkantha base camp. A good day to complete journey at the prettiest campsite. Kedarkantha peak up above the trees is visible from here. Swargarohini, Bandarpunch and Kala Nag start revealing themselves from the base camp of Kedarkantha peak.

Make yourself comfortable inside the tents as the night is going to be sub zero and a clear sky opens up the ends of galaxies for you to capture.

Kedarkantha Base camp - Kedarkantha Summit - Hargaon (10km trek)

Summit day arrives. After breakfast, you move towards the Kedarkantha peak situated at a distance of 4km from the base camp and at an altitude of 3900m (12,500ft.)

Leaving behind the grass line, you tread over barren rocky surface. Gusty winds, contact of cold breeze and the Garhwal range of Himalayas are the highlights of this trek. Fascinating panoramic views at an altitude of 12,500ft. is exhilarating. Passionated photographers can take their favourite click.

Kedarkantha summit is a best vantage point of Swargarohini, Bandarpunch and Kala Nag at the same point. It is accompanied by Gangotri peaks, Jaonli and Draupadi ka Danda at a distance. A small stone Temple of Mahadev and Parvati at the top exemplifies the religious significance.

Rest for a while and then descend to Hargaon for the next 6km. Some villagers and their Bhotia dogs (Himalayan Mastiff) greet you with warmth and excitement at Hargaon. Our tents will be already pitched before you reach and kitchen staff ready to serve you hot lunch. ‘Chaanis’ (cattle sheds/huts of local villagers) can be visited to enjoy the evening tea with locals and their folklores.

Enjoy your last day of camping. You can also play Garhwali music and try folkdance with the trek staff.

Day 5 - Hargaon - Sankri (6km trek) - Departure

Start early today to arrive Sankri by 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. Final descent of Kedarkantha trek is of 6km through the dense oak and Pine forest. Say goodbye to the villagers, Bhotia dogs escort you down to the exit point of Hargaon. It is always the most touching moment for the travellers. Trekking back takes around 4hrs to reach Sankri.

Once you reach Sankri, you will have your lunch ready. Afterwards, a short visit can also be paid to the Sankri village if the cab is not ready to leave for Dehradun. It is time to say goodbye to the trek staff. You are going to take the lifetime memories of trek and hospitality.

Using Taxi :

From any of the stop as per request, we can arrange a pick and drop from Dehradun/Haridwar to basecamp. Cost will be shared by the travellers on equal basis. The fare is approximately 4500 rs. for sumo/bolero/max one way which can accommodate upto 8 people. While a Tempo traveler is a better choice for upto 14 people at cost of approximately 8000 rs. from Dehradun and 10000 rs. approximately from Haridwar. It is not the part of trek fee and to be paid directly to the taxi operator. We can also forward you the contacts of operators to negotiate yourself.

There may be surge in above mentioned prices at the time of Char Dham Yatra season.

Using public transport :

From the Mussoorie bus stand on Gandhi road near railway station of Dehradun, you can take Uttarakhand transport buses to Sankri. Roughly 200 kms journey will take 7-8 hrs. Buses are available as early at 5:30 AM. It is low on pocket at 300 rs per person.

How to reach Dehradun :

For the treks in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli district, Dehardun/ Haridwar is closest city for road, rail and air connectivity. It includes Kedarknatha, Har ki Dun, Dayara Bugyal, Dodital, Tapovan, Kedartal, Panwali Kantha, Tungnath and Valley of Flowers trek. Public transport and taxis are available easily from here.
