Tungnath trek is a beginners trek in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It is widely popular for its accessibility and religious significance. The tungnath ridge itself is a source of three streams. The ridge divides the waters of Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers. Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, Neelkanth and Kedarnath peaks are visible throughout the trek. Alpine meadow and the treeline rich in rhododendron adds charm to its aesthetics.

Tungnath trek takes you to the highest Shiva temple in the world. Tungnath means 'Lord of the peaks'. It is one of the ‘panch kedars' situated in uttarakhand. After Mahabharat ended up with the victory of Pandavas, they moved up the Himalayas for Moksha. Shiva knowing their plan to visit him for moksha disguised as a Bull and disappeared under the ground. Bheem tried to stop him but could not succeed and ripped his body in different parts. Lord shiva re-emerged at different places. Tungnath represents the divine hand (bahu) of the Bull. The temple lies about 2km below the Chandrashila Peak.

Deoria Tal is a naturally formed lake at a distance of 3 km from the Sari village. At an altitude of 2,438m, the lake is surrounded by dense forest with the magnificent snow capped Bandarpunch peaks in the backdrop. Deoria tal is known for its two worlds at one place as it offers the mesmerizing panoramic view of giant Himalayan peaks with chaukhamba standing up front and their perfect reflection on the surface of this emerald lake.

Note:

  1. We can also provide you transport from nearest airport/rail head/ city at a cost ranging from 4000rs to 6000rs. Depending upon the distance to base camp, the price is applicable for 8 persons. If you wish to negotiate yourself, we can also provide you the contacts of cab service providers.
  2. Offloading charges are 300/bag for one day on informing 7 days before the commencement of the trek, thereafter, 350/ bag for one day.
  3. In case of illness/ sickness/ injury, the trekker will be escorted back to base camp by the support staff.

Day 1 - Arrival at Sari village (54km drive from Rudraprayag).

After a long drive from either Haridwar or Dehradun, you reach ‘Sari’ village. It is located on the Ukhimath-Chopta highway. Drive between Srinagar and sari is on meandering roads in one of the most dense forests of chopta valley throughout the way. Piercing sunrays falling on earth through the leaves illuminates the shadowed green picturesque.

Devprayag is situated on the way to Sari village which is situated at the confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers forming Ganga. Number of devotees visit the temples here everyday. Pious travellers can take the blessings. Along the 7- 8 hrs drive of 220km, there are several cities enroute. There is no need to carry lunch, you can have it at any of the the stops.

Stay at sari village is going to be warm. Eat healthy food and Sleep tight to rennergize for the next day’s hike.

Day 2 - Sari village - Deoria tal (3km trek)

After having breakfast, the trek will be around 3km today. The trail reveals many secrets in its undulating track. The parallel sight of Maples, Rhododendron trees along the trek is spectacular.

Deoria Tal is a breathtaking lake campsite and the most beautiful landscape in Tungnath Chandrashila trek. Deoria Tal is a surreal location for landscape and night sky photography.

Lucky trekkers might encounter with Musk deers and Monal here as this lake is a part of Kedarnath Musk deer sanctuary.

Today's trek starts with a descent of 3km back to sari village. From there, we have to cover the motorable distance of 20km to chopta. Chopta is a hamlet at the end of Ukhimath highway. The region is full of adjoining small meadows and evergreen forests. The valley is a part of Kedarnath wildlife sanctuary which is popular for Musk deer conservation throughout the world. Thereafter, moving on a serpentine chopta to tungnath trek distance of 3km, you reach Tungnath Temple.

Tungnath Temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world and essentially one among the ‘Panch kedars of Uttarakhand’. Offering prayers here is important. Take the blessings and rest for an hour, it will help you reenergize for the hike to chandrashila peak. The Summit at 3680m is the best Vantage point for all of the Chopta valley in the Garhwal range of Himalayas.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama during his exile of 14 years came to this holy place to worship Lord Shiva and ‘Chandrashila’ is that sacred stone which was worshipped by him. The sacred stone is representation of Lord Shiva.

After capturing the moment and taking break for a while, we will trek back to Chopta. Tonight’s stay will be at Hotel. Explore this beautiful hill station this evening by interacting with the locals and listening to their versions of mythological stories behind Tungnath.

Using Taxi :

From any of the stop as per request, we can arrange a pick and drop from Dehradun/Haridwar to basecamp. Cost will be shared by the travellers on equal basis. The fare is approximately 6500 rs. for sumo/bolero/max one way which can accommodate upto 8 people. While a Tempo traveler is a better choice for upto 14 people at cost of approximately 10000 rs. from Dehradun and Haridwar. It is not the part of trek fee and to be paid directly to the taxi operator. We can also forward you the contacts of cab service providers to negotiate yourself.

Note :

There may be surge in above mentioned prices at the time of Char Dham Yatra season.

Using public transport :

From the bus station near parade ground in Dehradun, you can take Uttarakhand transport buses to Rudraprayag. Roughly 181 kms journey will take 5-6 hrs. Buses are available as early at 6:00 AM. It is low on pocket at 250 rs. per person. From Rudraprayag, for the remaining 53kms till Sari (Chopta), you can get a taxi.

How to reach Dehradun :

For the treks in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli district, Dehardun/ Haridwar is closest city for road, rail and air connectivity. It includes Kedarknatha, Har ki Dun, Dayara Bugyal, Dodital, Tapovan, Kedartal, Panwali Kantha, Tungnath and Valley of Flowers trek. Public transport and taxis are easily available from here.
