Valley of flowers and Hemkund sahib trek in Uttarakhand offers an intrinsic blend of splendid nature, spirituality and adventure. The trek is present in the transition zone between the Himalayas and Zanskar range. The trek starts from Govindghat near Joshimath. While after Ghangria, there is separate trail leading to Valley of flowers and Hemkund Sahib.

Valley of flowers perched at an height of 3537m is known for its endemic alpine flowers and ravishing beauty. The stretch over an expanse of 87sqkm is second core zone of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. It was accidentally discovered by mountaineer and botanist ‘Frank S. Smythe’ in 1931. The area is situated on the Zanskar range of the Himalayas with the highest point in the National park being ‘Gauri parbat’ at 6719m above sea level. The peripheral majestic mountain peaks combined with the grandeur of the lush green meadows and exotic wildlife makes it a perfect getaway destination. There are approximately 300 species of flowering plants which blooms maximum in the month between July and September giving you the best time to visit Valley of flowers.

The alternate trail from Ghangria leads to Hemkund Sahib which is a revered Sikh shrine. The gurudwara is flanked by a holy lake and a temple dedicated to Lakshman. The Shrine is located at an altitude of 4328m and is a part of cultural circuit for shikhs. The place is also deeply connected to the 10th Sikh Guru “Guru Gobind Singh”. It is the reason that you will be accompanied by a large number of sikh devotees. The tranquility and peace of the trek and shrine itself will take away all the woes of your everyday life. Note:

  1. We can also provide you transport from nearest airport/rail head/ city at a cost ranging from 4000rs to 6000rs. Depending upon the distance to base camp, the price is applicable for 8 persons. If you wish to negotiate yourself, we can also provide you the contacts of cab service providers.
  2. Offloading charges are 300/bag for one day on informing 7 days before the commencement of the trek, thereafter, 350/ bag for one day.
  3. In case of illness/ sickness/ injury, the trekker will be escorted back to base camp by the support staff.

Day 1 - Arrival at Govindghat (296km drive from Haridwar).

After a long drive of 10hrs from either Dehradun or Haridwar on NH58 highway, you will arrive at Joshimath. Govindghat is at a distance of 22km from there. Driving across the Ganga and Alaknanda river valley introduce you with the endemic diversity of flora in the Garhwal region. The gracious transition of landscapes exemplifies the exotic beauty of Uttarakhand. There are several big towns enroute allowing you take a break for lunch.

Govindghat is a hamlet at an altitude of 1800m and is located at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Lakshman Ganga rivers. You will have prearranged good accommodation at Govindghat. The gurudwara located alongside the lake is quite popular and also provides accommodation to pilgrims. Sleep early to get re-energized for trekking Valley of flowers next day.

Day 2 - Govindghat - Poolna (4km drive) - Ghangria (9km trek).

Wake up early, have morning tea and breakfast. Thereafter, we drive to ‘Poolna’ which is a motorable distance of 4km only. Typically, poolna is base camp for the Valley of flowers and Hemkund Sahib trek. Well defined pavements to Ghangria is motivating for its clean and tidy track. It is well maintained by the humble efforts of Sikh pilgrims and Eco visitors. All the travellers are also well advised to leave no trace and bring back all the wrappers and other non biodegradable waste.

Trekking the distance of 9km parallel along the river takes you to Ghangria. The table top topography hints the proximity of Ghangria. Upon arrival at Ghangria, accommodations is at homestays. Intermingle with locals, explore the surrounding and capture your stories.

Day 3 - Ghangria - Valley of flowers - Ghangria (8km trek).

The day marks the reason of your journey as you are going to leave for Valley of flowers. The day starts with the scrumptious breakfast. There will a round trip from Ghangria to Valley of flowers and back to Ghangria. By the time, you pack your bags. The pack lunch will be ready for you to have it on the top.

After taking the entry tickets for the Valley of flowers, you will continue on the trail. The valley starts unveiling itself after you cross a small bridge just within a mile.There is a full day to be enchanted by the riot of colours in the valley. Contrary to the previous day, you come across a very few people.

As we open up into the heart of the biosphere reserve, the vibrant mix of hues is so mesmerizing that you never want to get off the the sight. The majestic sprawl over 87sqkm boast of close to 300 species of flowers such as Anemone, Marsh Marigold, Himalayan Blue poppy, Rhododendrons and other. Some are of very high medicinal values. The floral composition keeps shifting which blooms highest for three months of July, August and September and hence it is the best time to visit Valley of flowers. It is also the best place to behold the spectacular view of Zanskar range in Uttarakhand. After having pack lunch, rest for a while. On the same day, we trek back to Ghangria. you will spend this evening there with some activities to get re-energized for the next day.

Day 4 - Ghangria - Hemkund Sahib - Ghangria (12km trek).

The day starts with sikh chantings. Ghangria is a stopover for hundreds of sikh devotees. Hence you can wake up early to trek faster and return before weather changes. Nobody knows when the clear sky is going to turn showery on Hemkund Sahib trek.

After the breakfast, take the steep hike with slow and steady pace along the pilgrim. Sooner, you will leave the treeline behind. By the time, the low oxygen level in the air might have started expressing in the form of nausea and headache. Move consistently with only a few breaks. It will help you trek without breakdown.

All the fatigue pain disappear on reaching the Hemkund Sahib. You will be welcomed with tea and khichdi from Gurdwara. The Sight of Hemkund Sahib lake flanked by Laxman temple is religious cum enthralling. Serenity, the reflections of peaks and spectacular landscape is a lifetime memory. After taking short rest, you will trek back to Ghangria on the same day.

Day 5 - Ghangria - Govindghat (13km trek).

you will follow the same trail which was trekked on the first day. Large number of people will be accompanying you throughout the way. You can have your pack lunch at any of the beautiful location midway or at Poolna. you will be occupied by the Valley of flowers trek memories.

Once reaching Poolna, we will drive back to Govindghat. There will be stay at guest house and departure on next day morning.

Using Taxi :

From any of the stop as per request, we can arrange a pick and drop from Dehradun/Haridwar to basecamp. Cost will be shared by the travellers on equal basis. The fare is approximately 4500 rs. for sumo/bolero/max one way which can accommodate upto 8 people. While a Tempo traveler is a better choice for upto 14 people at cost of approximately 8000 rs. from Dehradun and 10000 rs. approximately from Haridwar. It is not the part of trek fee and to be paid directly to the taxi operator. We can also forward you the contacts of operators to negotiate yourself.

There may be surge in above mentioned prices at the time of Char Dham Yatra season.

Using public transport :

From the Mussoorie bus stand on Gandhi road near railway station of Dehradun, you can take Uttarakhand transport buses to Sankri. Roughly 200 kms journey will take 7-8 hrs. Buses are available as early at 5:30 AM. It is low on pocket at 300 rs per person.

How to reach Dehradun :

For the treks in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli district, Dehardun/ Haridwar is closest city for road, rail and air connectivity. It includes Kedarknatha, Har ki Dun, Dayara Bugyal, Dodital, Tapovan, Kedartal, Panwali Kantha, Tungnath and Valley of Flowers trek. Public transport and taxis are available easily from here.
