Tungnath and Chandrashila
A short trek out of Chopta that takes you to the highest Shiva temple, and then keeps climbing comes Chandrashilla from where you get a 360 degree view of Garhwal Himalayas. Our Tungnath Chandrashila trek package is built for exactly that.
Walk the Tungnath Trek from Sacred Trails to Himalayan Peaks
Most people land on this page after searching for a Chopta Tungnath trek or a Tungnath Chandrashila trek package, so let’s be direct about it. This is one of the shortest ways in the Himalayas to stand somewhere genuinely extraordinary without needing a week off work or prior trekking experience.
auto_awesome Trek Highlights
Tungnath Temple (3,680 m)
Stone-built, centuries old, and the highest point any Shiva temple reaches anywhere on the planet. Part of the Panch Kedar circuit, and the emotional centre of this whole trek.
Chandrashila Summit (4,000 m)
Forty minutes past the temple, on a steeper stretch, is where the trek actually pays off. Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi and Kedar peak line up in front of you on a clear morning.
Rhododendron & Oak Forest
The trail from Chopta climbs through thick forest before it opens into meadow, so you get shade, birdsong, and the odd Monal sighting before the views even begin.
Chopta Meadows
Your base for both nights, a bowl of grassland ringed by conifer at roughly 2,680 m, cold enough at dawn to need every layer you packed.

Best Time To Visit Tungnath and Chandrashila
Monsoon clouds start clearing out through September, the meadows are still green from the rains, and the skies tend to stay honest through the morning. April to June is the other strong window, warmer, longer days, rhododendrons in bloom lower down the trail. The temple closes for winter sometime around early November, when the deity is moved down to Mukunath for the cold months, and reopens around April. If snow's what you're after, December to February brings it, but expect a slower, colder climb and pack accordingly.
How the Chopta Tungnath Trek Actually Unfolds
Here's the trail, stop by stop, from where you start to where it ends.
Chopta

Forest Stretch
A shaded, well-laid stone path through oak and rhododendron for the first couple of kilometres.
Open Meadows
Tree line ends, the trail opens up, and the first real mountain views show up.
Tungnath Temple
The highest Shiva temple in the world, 3,680 m up, and part of the Panch Kedar circuit.
Chandrashila Ridge
A steeper 45-minute push past the temple to the 4,000 m summit and its 360° view.
Your Detailed Itinerary For Tungnath Chandrashila Trek Package
Three days, one route, whether you join with our trekking company from Delhi or from Rishikesh. Only the drive at either end changes.
Pickup to Chopta Day One
We pick you up early and head into the hills, following the Alaknanda for a good stretch of the drive before the road climbs toward Chopta. It's a long day in the car either way, but the scenery does most of the work. You'll reach Chopta by evening, settle into camp, and get briefed on the next day's climb over dinner.
Chopta to Tungnath, Chandrashila & Back Summit Day
This is the day the whole package is built around. You'll start early, before the sun gets too high, and climb steadily through forest into open meadow. Reaching Tungnath Temple usually takes 3 to 4 hours depending on your pace, we don't rush this part. From the temple, it's a steeper 45-minute push to Chandrashila summit, where Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul and Kedar peak all show up if the weather's playing along. You'll descend the same route back to Chopta for the night.
Chopta to Drop Point Day Three
A relaxed morning followed by the drive back down, retracing yesterday's route to your pickup city. Most groups are dropped back by evening, depending on traffic and where you started from.

Everything you need to know before you set foot on the trail.
Yes. At 3,680 m, Tungnath is the highest of the Panch Kedar shrines and the highest temple dedicated to Shiva anywhere. It's believed to be over a thousand years old, and legend ties it to the Pandavas during their search for Shiva after the Kurukshetra war.
It's rated easy to moderate. The trail is a well-laid stone path for most of the way, around 4.5 km to the temple and another 1.5 km on to Chandrashila summit. Reasonable fitness helps on the final stretch, but it's genuinely doable for first-time trekkers and most families.
Pickup and drop from Rishikesh, stay in Chopta for both nights, all meals, transport through the route, permits, and an experienced local guide. It runs 3 days, 2 nights, at the same ₹6,999 per person as our Delhi departure.
April to June and September to November tend to give the clearest skies and the best mountain views. December to February brings snow if that's what you're after, though the climb is slower and colder. The temple itself closes for winter from early November to around April.
Yes, this is genuinely one of the more accessible treks in Uttarakhand. The trail is well-defined, doesn't demand technical skill, and plenty of first-timers and families complete it comfortably each season.
Yes, our Tungnath Chandrashila trek package covers both in one continuous climb on trek day, temple first, then the steeper push to the summit. They're not sold as separate treks since they sit on the same trail, roughly 1.5 km apart.
Our Tungnath trek package cost starts from ₹6,999 per person, whether you're joining from Delhi or Rishikesh. That covers stay, meals, transport, permits, and a guide for the full 3-day, 2-night trip. Final pricing can shift slightly with group size or any customisation you'd like.
It can, as a customisation outside the standard 3-day itinerary. Message us on WhatsApp and our team will work out an extended plan and updated cost with you.
